Two lynx are roaming free in the UK countryside after a suspected “illegal release” incident. on Wednesday evening, the Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) alerted the public that the felines were loose on its land.
The CNPA is actively collaborating with Police Scotland to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident while reassuring residents that the shy nature of these large cats translates to a “low risk” for people. A CNPA spokesperson provided insight: “The park authority have been notified about a suspected illegal release of two lynx in the Cairngorms National Park.
“Police Scotland have been informed and are working closely with partners (including the Park Authority) to establish the full picture and take appropriate action.” They also expressed disapproval over the release: “We condemn the illegal release of wild animals in the strongest possible terms and we are also concerned for the welfare of the lynx that have been released.”
Advice was offered to anyone who might encounter a lynx: “Whilst they are shy animals and low risk to humans, we would ask anyone who does spot a lynx not to approach nor to attend the area.”
As the police investigation continues, the CNPA has refrained from further comments. In support, the Highland Wildlife Park is aiding in the search effort, reinforcing the CNPA’s message for the public to keep their distance if they see the creatures.
A spokesperson for the park underscored their involvement, stating: “We have been notified about the suspected illegal release of two lynx in the Cairngorms National Park. Although these are not our lynx, we are working closely with Police Scotland and partners to safely retrieve the animals. Whilst lynx present a low risk to humans we would ask anyone who does spot them not to approach nor to attend the area.”
On X, Police Scotland confirmed they are investigating the incident and call on public assistance. A spokesperson stated: “Two lynx have been spotted in the Drumguish area near to Kingussie. Specially trained staff from Highland Wildlife Park are aiding officers in the search. Do not approach the lynx or attend the area, but instead call police via 101. Quote inc no 2179/08/01/25 when calling.”
