“I am a rapist,” said a Frenchman accused of drugging his wife so that he and dozens of strangers could sexually assault her, his first testimony in a trial that has horrified France. for in-depth analysis and a deeper perspective on gender violence and sexual assault, FRANCE 24’s Mark Owen is joined by Dr Ummni Khan, Associate Professor in the Department of Law and Legal Studies at Carleton University. Dr. Khan researches the socio-legal construction of deviant sexuality and addresses the self-serving myths that perpetrators use to justify their actions. She says that Gisele Pelicot has become a symbol for the world in shifting shame onto the perpetrators.

  1. Something she said was really on point which was he wasn’t saying he was sorry until he got caught. Maybe because he’s not sorry he did it but he is sorry he got caught having done it. Secondly, lots of people go through serious abuse as children and they don’t grow up to do what this man has done to his wife. It’s unfathomable to me that anyone could do this to another human being

  2. His lawyer is actually making me ill. No excuse.

  3. How did she find out. This is just horrendous 😢

  4. These "ordinary" men were willing to participate and they were not bothered in the slightest that she was unconscious; profoundly disturbing! One of the attorney's said it had something to do with certain men who have a "criminal" mind, but I don't think so. It's how some of these men were educated in their homes, or the lack thereof, regarding how to treat women…and I'm betting that some of these men have daughters, sisters, wives, etc., yet they still chose to violate an unconscious woman. Despicable human beings!

  5. If one of the defendants were 26 what age would that have made them at the time of the crime? Absolutely vile.

  6. I never heard that ideia that the men owes his wife and can offer her to someone else. That is knew to me. Don´t give ideas to them. That is ridiculous.

  7. Why do men think they can get away with this behaviour?
That is the question that our society needs to address!

  8. God, this is horrible. This woman is a hero to all, god bless her

  9. those oh you mean men….

  10. end male violence against women, where are the Not all men, silent as usual

  11. 50 strangers 50 males

  12. Ask all the children who have been made STAR in these movies to go after the yokes who made money😮🙏🇮🇪💔

  13. The excuse that they thought she was pretending to be asleep is absurd. For one thing, I don't believe a person can't tell when someone is pretending to be passed out vs. drugged and passed out. For another, even if you were really playing out a consensual fantasy where someone is pretending to be unconscious you need to get CONSENT from the other party while they are AWAKE before participating in such an act.

  14. I have sympathy for the past version of him as a child. I don’t have any sympathy for him as he is now. Why is it that women face so much sexual violence compared to men and they just internalize it, while a shocking amount of men who were abused as children use it as fuel to do the same and worse to others?

  15. 2:13 " Hardcore eroticism " is not exactly a term I was expecting …

  16. This woman deserves a national medal for forcing the world to watch the evidence. Furthermore it's a brilliant move to degrade the very men who once thought they were in a position to degrade her.

  17. This is Hell

  18. Ernestine Shore

  19. Aaron Villages

  20. I don’t buy his apology for an iota. He’s not sorry he did it, he’s sorry he got caught. Regardless of what happened to him as a kid, he knew better than to do it to someone else over and over again. I have no sympathy for him.

  21. 928 Gene Track

  22. How can one not notice they ve been raped after they woke up? She caught veneral infections, stil didnt notice?

  23. Here in USA we have something somewhat similar going on, and it is wild.

  24. no one has told the story of what that creepy husband was doing the first 40 years of their marriage? The case deals with the past 10 years.

  25. and yet the depraved rapists are pleading not guilty

  26. I'm confused…shouldn't the perps always have been to blame?

  27. Her ex husband is disgusting. Regret like hell. He did it for 9 years. God bless his wife.

  28. Shame the men,,,, THEY ARE GUILTY DISGUSTING AND BARE ALL THE SHAME. she’s amazing, brave and deserves only the best.

  29. Once again, men have no lives outside of disrespecting women and trying to impress men they dont even know. Its why they never have the energy to become decent people, barable partners, functioning parents or satisfying lovers.

  30. So basically, his childhood meant he 100% knew better… cause theres nothing else to gather from that.

  31. The statement that not long ago husbands were legally allowed to rape their wives, reminded me of a case in the late 1990s where a Swedish man raped his Singaporean wife while she was in a coma. He was caught when Hospital staff noticed her pregnancy. The Swedish courts ruled in his favour, stating it was within his rights to have sex with a comatosed woman.

  32. 6:00 Traumatized people may scream, bleed, and feel tremendous pain, but to use that as an excuse to hold a perpetual party over defiling another is insulting, at least to this particular trauma survivor. Traumatized people are often disbelieved because they may regress or manifest behaviors that others cannot readily understand, especially without history. Abusers only exploit others for that particular payoff. The payoff was male bonding over humiliating a woman as an object. This seems so obvious, its incredible to me that so many DON'T seem to get it, or the dynamics.

  33. 1:52 I am not French, yet as a woman, this resonates strongly with me. I believe you underestimate the resonance of this crime, as well as this abject proof of the banality of evil, and its excusors and enablers.

  34. If only one of the man would have honor, they would have informed the Police but most of them (two apparently turned down, but still didn't inform the Police) said yes.

  35. Do you recall the case of the Austrian Fritzl, who built a prison for his daughter, who, after years of s.a. by him, having run away and brought back "home" by police, was turning 18 and could habe legally left… he locked her up in there for decades and she bore 5 kids who grew up in that cellar with her…
That is the logical bad end of patriarchy, and the reason I really can't find those alpha males funny.

  36. To giselle oneself should henceforth be mean standing up against sexist lies.

  37. Sick!!!!!
