EU, UK govts embrace dangerous ‘externalising solutions’ for migrants fleeing ‘devastating crises’

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is meeting his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni in Rome to discuss tackling illegal immigration, a day after another Channel migrant shipwreck claimed eight lives. Starmer, whose centre-left Labour Party was elected with a crushing parliamentary majority in July, has vowed to fight illegal immigration, a hot-button topic in British politics for years. Far-right riots shook cities and towns across England and Northern Ireland shortly after Starmer’s election, the UK’s worst unrest since 2011, with mosques and migrant accommodation centres often targeted. The perilous cross-Channel journeys migrants attempt from northern France have posed a fiendishly difficult problem to solve for successive British prime ministers. Starmer’s trip to Italy has already spurred criticism, even within his own party. Labour MP Kim Johnson told The Guardian newspaper it was “disturbing that Starmer is seeking to learn lessons from a neo-fascist government, particularly after the anti-refugee riots and far-right racist terrorism that swept Britain this summer”. As Starmer and Meloni seek to significantly curb migrant boats reaching UK and Italy, FRANCE 24’s Gavin Lee is joined by award-winning Author, Journalist Sally Hayden and Andrew Geddes, Professor, Political Scientist, Chair in Migration Studies and Director of the Migration Policy Centre (MPC) at the European University Institute (EUI).

  1. "dangerous"? for WHOM? Europeans no longer want these invadors. Deal with it.

  2. this must stop

  3. why Can't you send back the illegals who is already in uk, then new people will not come again. now they know if they are here, they will be safe. don't talk rubbish without doing correct things, especially they will give birth to kids and they know they will be safe. waisting tax money for illegals and taxpayers are struggling. more tax for the taxpayers.

  4. More drownings might discourage these crossings?

  5. 10:31. Excuse me, but we must use a word to denote them. Migrant is a term that has been effectively imposed on people in public discourse, we used to use more descriptive ones. I know that they are human and matter, but that does not mean a broad spectrum discussion cannot be had.

  6. Useless politicians

  7. How exactly do you plan on keeping them in Albania? if that comes to fruition!

  8. "Fleeing devastating crises" by traversing a dozen safe countries. Okay, whatever you say.

  9. Why do you never invite the people who has seen their islands and businesses destroyed or victims. Bring a panel in a stadium of the girls who tried to enjoy new year in Cologne or wanted to watch a game of football in Paris

  10. Still blaming the people smugglers, nothing mentioned by the EU or UK actually taking away the incentive for illegal migrants paying the smugglers in the first place.

  11. Sally Hayden makes a very good point. It's a bit myopic to only consider the problem at the borders. The issue is several people are facing real danger in their homes and need help. So better solutions would perhaps require a discussion on better coordination of food aid, peace keeping missions, perhaps trying to stop the flow of arms to these dangerous groups, etc. That might be a better use of money than throwing it at short-term, patchy solutions. Surely, we can't only be interested in other territories when it comes to plunder.

  12. Set up factory in Africa, if there are jobs there, maybe they don't need to cross borders?

  13. What is the cause of immigration? It should be asking that question if not, it will never be solved. People will keep coming nonstop. Your government is a evil and they are everywhere around the world

  14. Citizen action to protect their property is needed.

  15. Stop stupid women like that one for a start! If they were fleeing what she says, why do they cross all across europe to come to the UK?

  16. Tony Abbott did it successfully in Australia

  17. Send them back immediately

  18. All sides should join hands to solve this problem.
