Protests in Georgia over ‘foreign agent’ bill | BBC News

Police in Georgia fired tear gas and water cannon into crowds protesting against a bill seen by the opposition as targeting media freedoms.

Thousands waving Georgian and European Union flags gathered outside parliament to protest what they see as a Russian-inspired law.

Under the bill – dubbed the “foreign agent” law- independent media that receive more than 20% of their funding from foreign donors would have to register as organisations “bearing the interests of a foreign power”.

  1. That is wrong, it’s a better way. TURN THE TVS Off. Sounds crazy, but think about the financial impact.

  2. Now Biden's America won't be able to export its Rainbow, LGBTQ, and 51+ gender ideology.

  3. Criminal West trying block a law which wouldn't allow them support the national puppets that allows them to rule from outside. No country has the right to interfere in another country's decision to dictate their internal legal order. As for the protester or they are the recipient of that money or just functional social entities whose brain is intoxicated by their ignorance. They only have to try to finance political agendas in the hegemon boss. Infantile people.

  4. Do actual Georgians (outside of the young fashion crowd in Tbilisi) who have family that for generations have fought and died against foreign influence and invasion for centuries and centuries to protect Georgian integrity, culture, the Church (the Orthodox Truth) etc. really think that this law, as the U.S. has in place (subject to jail time), per Hillary Clinton's playbook, dubbed it "Russian-style" (retarded), is actually going to help their country remain truly Georgian that represents their Holy and honorable past? Laughable that NATO, EU and the U.S. (utter flaming hypocrites of an unknown level) would threaten real Georgians for wanting transparency as to who is influencing their beautiful country, which mind you is very small in size and seemingly weak recently when threatened by pitchforks and torches at parliament (punches and yelling). Do the actual Georgian people NOT want to know who is influencing their country in disguise? HA. IF they are really that dumb, and see no reason to understand who is influencing their most wonderful God-given country to pull them into a western, Russian buffer-zone scheme (Ukraine), then all the heroes and Saints of Georgia are simply betrayed by present Georgians that will go down as those that initiated the rot of the country forever. Vakhtang Gorgasali is looking down on all of you Georgians to protect this Orthodox country, given to you by God – to not give it away to the Godless!!! Simply let this law go into place, and hopefully you Georgian people will see that many western-influenced NGO operations in Georgia that are there are there with a goal to primarily keep you hating Russians and your other (naughty) neighbors, to further your people's division and conquering of one of the greatest Orthodox countries in the world!

  5. Wonderful!
Next step is to get Ukrainian Saachwilly from the looney bin and install him to be a President again

  6. Transparency, lets see WHO is trying to manipulate georgias popular opinion. Lets expose USA and the west.

  7. 1:40 The "free media" is the one financed by western powers. The law fortunately is going forwards and georgia will NOT become the next UA.

  8. I understand the law is similar to The Foreign Agents Registration Act, (FARA) of the US Code

  9. Everytime I read this headline I always confuse Georgia the country near Russia with Georgia the state near Florida.

  10. How can foreign money serve the interest of Georgians?

  11. Georgia 🇬🇪🇪🇺❤️❤️❤️

  12. Brave people of Georgia 🙏

  13. America is on other continent , EU is far away and your neighbours are beside you.Georgia be clever, be smart save your future.🕊️🤝♥️

  14. Where is Victoria Nuland ?? She loves protest doesn't she ?? She needs to be there handing out cookies to the old flocks and kids …..

  15. This is baffling. Usually, protests are over better living conditions, or unjust prosecution, or against corruption. Never have I seen protests from people wanting foreign institutions to have less transparency and greater political power. It's like I'm living in opposite world.

  16. What did Russia do to us?

  17. LOL, George Jologua has been involved with multiple NGOs since 2012, receiving funding from various EU and US organizations and corporations. Over the past decade, he has overseen projects supported by UNDP, UNFPA, OSGF, and others. Essentially, he acts as a foreign agent, representing foreign countries and international corporations in industries like oil, arms, mining, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and more, all aiming to promote their own agendas.

  18. Georgia has come such a long way since the old Jim Crow days, when even the best Georgians like Martin Luther King and Julian Bond were subject to oppression by the state.

  19. It’s unfortunate that lot of people claim that this law is also in US too, but it’s more similar to the law passed in Russia in 2012, passing it would sabotage Georgia’s opportunity to join EU and will just leave it in darkness, even Russian propagandists themselves praised the law 🥲🇬🇪

  20. Same law in USA fools

  21. I am Georgian. 🇬🇪In my country, journalists spit on the government 24/7. I don't turn on the TV. It's all agitated by the members of the previous government. There is no free media in our country. We think that most of them are paid.
In your country, when the police are spat on, physically and verbally insulted, what does the police do? Are there journalists in your country who insult people in the street because of their different opinion?
What you see is violence and vandalism organized by "sponsored" leaders from outside of the country.

  22. Russia working hard to control the narrative… as usual.

  23. This news reader cannot read.

  24. არა რუსულ მთავრობას საქართველოში !

  25. LONG LIVE GEORGIA FREE GEORGIANS 🙏 💙 ❤️

  26. 🇬🇪Georgia is part of 🇷🇺Russia

  27. Puppet crying 😁😁

  28. The CIA is behind many of these NGOs. That's no secret. That's why they don't want people to know where their money comes from. Russia chased most of them away when the law was changed there. These people are lying about helping Georgia. They are helping America in its continued war against Russia.

  29. Hypocritically in the USA there is a foreign agent law!

  30. "The national Strife and Hatred among each other is fueled by very specific Elements who don't want them to Calm down. They are those who live in London, New York and Tel Aviv Today. Tomorrow in Warsaw, Prague or Berlin. Because they can do their Business from anywhere." Toosely based on our Führer..

  31. riots everywhere

  32. 3000 years ago My caste Gurjar came from Georgia and settled in India. Now known as the Gujjar Caste.

We want to go back and claim that land by force like Israel, please help me as well.

  33. არა რუსეთს, კი გამჭირვალობის კანონს, უცხო ქვეყნის აგენტებმა რომ არ არიონ.

  34. Hows controversial to register as a foreighn agent if you are one ? We have the same law here in the states

  35. No to press freedom & transparency! No to new law! 😂🇬🇪

  36. Probably looking to their neighbours in Ukraine and Armenia and worked out that being western puppets isnt in their interests despite what is said here

  37. For those people who don't understand why we don't want this law, it's all the same anyway. I lived in Europe for 7 years and I could not make anyone understand that I am Georgian and not Russian. So watch our events and just shut up

  38. I hope this don’t spill over into Alabama. Praise the lord.

  39. I wish Georgia was exactly like my town.

  40. If the Georgian people are not happy about this new law then they know who to vote for in this year's election…Not the Dream Party!!!

  41. Authoritarian regimes like to call any dissenting voice a foreign agent. This law is designed to muzzle anyone on this pretext, following Putin the Puny’s playbook.

  42. Glory to the people of Georgia!

  43. The nefarious EU is probably assisting these riots. They have many ways (using member states funds) to promote unrest in order to acheive their goals.

  44. This doesn’t look like agency intervention at all. BBC Propaganda piece, surely not 😱

  45. Wait, is this why they are protesting?
    Seriously

  46. Georgia was at crossroads in 2008, and had a bloody nose . Georgians forgot their forefathers invited the Russian Emporor for protection from Ottoman despotism . The present day Ottoman inspired Turkish President Erdogan is at the doorsteps of Georgia and Armenia . Paris and London will always be faraway, their own armies too small to fight against modern day Tudkish army and their ally – Azerbaidjan ! But UK / Fra do not care about locals .
