Flash flooding caused by Hurricane Helene left the North Carolina mountain village of Chimney Rock unrecognizable. NBC News recently spent the day with Mayor Peter O’Leary to see how the tourist destination is beginning the long road to recovery.

Where was your fabulous VP. Harris when this happened. I see Trump down in the trenches. I seen Elon Musk give the home owners free Star Link. Then i seen the federal government give out a few $750 checks. While immigrants are living in 5 star hotels for free on the taxes paid in by the same people who lost everything in this disaster. This is government tyranny. Anout time we the people get our country back by any means necessary
@timothyaldridge5363
I heard the boys came down from West Virginia and got a road thru. Not the state
@jharvey9898
Chimney Rock and Lake Lure was my first “outing” when I moved up here in 2003 and needed a break from unpacking. I can’t wait to see it rebuilt.
@jharvey9898
We saw neither hide nor hair of FEMA or the national guard. Hendersonville NC. Gubmint couldn’t care less about us.
@justliss1827
The river moved back to where it moved in 1916…😮😮😮
@Love-on7vv

Western NC has a special place in this Georgians heart. I pray they recover better than ever
@DavidNicholson101
I really believe by 2030, everybody's gonna realize why this storm happened😡😡😡. Cooper's a deceptive devil.
@BarbaraLogsdon-h4z
Knowing most of these people are on MAGA koolaid, their cult leader’s enemy has given this disastrous area all the support they need from the federal government. Government rules and regulations for funding require excess paperwork in any place, whether it involves nursing homes or FEMA as an example. People out there need guidance to navigate the government system for assistance. It’s the community people who are working as a spirited team which makes the rebuilding of a devastated community possible.
@bethwhite2857
Thank kalamas husband and his black rock connection.
Why dont you cover who owns what and what development was pre planned..
That's the news the world wants uncovered.

OMG…everyone complains about the federal government. FEMA has its processes but honestly youd complain if they were just handing $$$ out to folks. NC is a catastrophy. I bet once you get your FEMA money you will hear complaints the money FEMA allows doesnt total cover everything as it was. Again, NC is a catastrophic event that even north carolinians didnt predict bc many of you didnt even evacuate! Fact is the FEMA money will put roofs over your head, electricity, windows and walls around you. Its gonna take time to rebuild to what it was. Why is it always the federal governments fault. You all just dont quit do you…centuries go by and you still hate the federal government and isolate yourselves up in the hills into these tiny communities that hold on next to streams that rage during carastrophic weather events! This Helene thing is gonna bring changes and like any changes youll have to evolve through it AND it will get built back – better. The future is good. Stop complaining ab the feds. Let that money whatever they give you get you started back on the right track😮 Helene isnt the federal governments fault. Neither is it yours…therefore lets get on with taking the needed steps. You gotta keep moving forward and stop looking backward…build forward. Its change.
@tangoalpha1905
There seems to be number of reservoirs in that area. I would like to know how many reservoirs dumped water into those rivers that particular day of destruction?
@DFontaine7
Why would you rebuild when you know this could happen again? IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN.
@jenoz-k2t
I wonder how many government hoops the illegal immigrants are jumping through to get their “benefits?!” Not as many as our US citizens impacted by the hurricane! Geez! As a tax paying citizen it’s the most frustrating thing I’ve ever had to watch!! 😢
@123gmor
I could never rebuild in the same location after a tragic event like that. Call me what you will but gulf water temperatures are rising and these events are becoming more likely.

It was a beautiful town, built right in the river. Did you all ever think that river would do this? We live and learn.
@michaelp8794
People don’t realize how beautiful Chimney Rock was unless they’ve been there. All of the mountain towns south of Asheville were so quaint and perfect. I’m still heartbroken.
